"Favourite Worst Nightmare" is the second studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, first released in Japan on April 18, 2007, and in the United Kingdom on April 23, 2007, by Domino Recording Company. Recorded at Miloco Studios in East London with producers James Ford and Mike Crossey, the album was preceded by the release of the lead single "Brianstorm" on April 2, 2007. This album marked the debut of new bassist Nick O'Malley, who replaced Andy Nicholson after he left the band shortly before their North American tour for their debut album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" (2006).
Compared to their debut, "Favourite Worst Nightmare" is seen as more musically ambitious, incorporating ambient sounds and expanded drum rhythms. Like its predecessor, the album received widespread critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the band's new emotional depth and frontman Alex Turner's matured songwriting. NME and Uncut ranked it the second-best album of 2007, while Dutch publication OOR named it the best album of the year. In retrospect, the album is viewed as the beginning of the band's evolving sound, which continued to change with each subsequent release.
In its first week, the album sold over 227,000 copies in the United Kingdom, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart. Both "Brianstorm" and "Fluorescent Adolescent" were hits on the UK Singles Chart, with "Brianstorm" reaching number two. In the United States, the album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200, selling approximately 44,000 copies in its first week. The album has since been certified 4× platinum in the UK. It was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize and won Best British Album at the 2008 Brit Awards.
