"Arthur Verocai" stands as the debut studio album by Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai, initially released by Continental Records in 1972. At the time of its release, Verocai had already established himself as a producer for esteemed musicians such as Elis Regina, Jorge Ben, and Ivan Lins. Immersed in the sounds of American funk and soul, Verocai drew inspiration from iconic artists like Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and Wes Montgomery during the album's creation.
Despite its musical brilliance, the album received little recognition from critics and struggled to find an audience upon its initial release in 1972. However, retrospective evaluations of the album have been overwhelmingly positive. Remarkably, the album experienced a resurgence in the mid-2000s, fueled by hip-hop acts sampling various tracks from the album. Rapper and producer MF DOOM notably sampled the song "Na Boca Do Sol" on the track "Orris Root Powder" in 2005. Additionally, hip-hop group Little Brother sampled "Caboclo" on their song "We Got Now" from the 2005 album "The Minstrel Show." This newfound attention brought "Arthur Verocai" back into the spotlight, cementing its status as a timeless musical gem.
