"Greatest Hits," the compilation album by Icelandic musician and singer Björk, saw its release on November 8, 2002, under the label One Little Indian. While not encompassing all of Björk's singles, every track featured on "Greatest Hits" had been released as a single. What made this collection unique was its assembly process, which involved fans participating in a survey on Björk's website to select the songs.
The songs on "Greatest Hits" were arranged in descending order based on fan votes, with one exception: "It's in Our Hands," a new addition to the compilation, appeared at the end. Prior to the album's release, two online surveys were conducted. The first allowed fans to vote for their favorite singles, forming the basis for the tracklist. Simultaneously, another survey allowed fans to vote for their favorite Björk songs, encompassing album tracks and B-sides. However, discrepancies arose between the two surveys, leading to some confusion regarding the authenticity of the fan-selected tracklist.
For instance, while "Hyperballad" emerged as the top pick from the overall survey, it was placed as the second track on "Greatest Hits." These divergences underscored the complexities of translating fan preferences into a cohesive compilation. Both survey results were made available on Björk's website, shedding light on the intricacies of the selection process behind "Greatest Hits."
