"Boston" is the debut studio album by the American rock band Boston, released on August 25, 1976, via Epic Records. Produced by the band's guitarist Tom Scholz and John Boylan, the album was crafted after Scholz and lead singer Brad Delp had struggled for years with demo tapes and label rejections. Their breakthrough came in 1975 when Epic Records took interest in their demo tape.
Scholz and Boylan bypassed Epic's directive to record the album in Los Angeles, convincing the label that the recording was taking place on the West Coast, while in reality, Scholz recorded most of the album in his Massachusetts home studio. The album was a direct reproduction of their demo material and showcased songs that had been in development over several years. The album’s signature "Boston sound" blended Scholz’s classical influences with melodic rock and early guitar-heavy rock, augmented by innovative analog effects. The album featured contributions from drummers Jim Masdea and Sib Hashian, guitarist Barry Goudreau, and bassist Fran Sheehan, with Masdea not continuing as a member.
Released in August 1976, "Boston" became the best-selling debut album in U.S. history at the time and earned the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Century Award for the best-selling debut album. Its singles, including "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," and "Foreplay/Long Time," were major hits, and the album remains a staple of classic rock radio. With over 17 million copies sold in the U.S. and at least 20 million worldwide, Boston stands as one of the best-selling debut albums ever.
