"Born in the U.S.A." is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released on June 4, 1984, by Columbia Records. Co-produced by Springsteen, Jon Landau, Steven Van Zandt, and Chuck Plotkin, the album was recorded with the E Street Band in New York City over a period of two years, from January 1982 to March 1984. Some of the tracks originated from the same demo sessions that produced Springsteen’s solo album "Nebraska" (1982), while others were written after that album's release. The recording sessions generated between 70 and 90 songs, with some released as B-sides, others appearing on compilation albums, and several remaining unreleased.
 
Accompanied by a comprehensive promotional campaign that included seven singles, five music videos, and three dance remixes, "Born in the U.S.A." became a commercial phenomenon. It was the best-selling album of 1985 and topped the charts in nine countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. All seven of its singles, including "Dancing in the Dark," "Born in the U.S.A.," "I'm on Fire," and "Glory Days," reached the U.S. top ten. The album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it Springsteen’s best-selling album and one of the best-selling albums of all time. At the time of its release, critics praised the album’s storytelling and musical performances, though some noted similarities to themes explored in Springsteen’s earlier work. The album was supported by the extensive Born in the U.S.A. Tour.
 
"Born in the U.S.A." catapulted Springsteen to international superstardom and marked the peak of his success as both a recording artist and performer. Although Springsteen later expressed some reservations about the album and the fame it brought him, retrospective evaluations have praised "Born in the U.S.A." as one of Springsteen’s finest works and one of the defining albums of the 1980s. It has appeared on numerous lists of the greatest albums of all time, including those compiled by Rolling Stone and NME, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2012.
