2x Red Vinyl
"Cruelty and the Beast," the third studio album by English extreme metal band Cradle of Filth, is a concept album steeped in the legend of the Hungarian "blood countess" Elizabeth Báthory. Featuring guest narration by acclaimed actress Ingrid Pitt, reprising her iconic role as Báthory from the Hammer Horror film "Countess Dracula" (1971), the album delves into the dark and macabre world of its titular character. Released on May 5, 1998, by Music for Nations, the album captured both attention and controversy.
Despite its thematic depth and conceptual brilliance, "Cruelty and the Beast" faced criticism for its production quality, a sentiment echoed by fans, critics, and even members of the band itself. In response, a remixed and remastered edition, titled "Cruelty and the Beast – Re-Mistressed," was released in November 2019, aiming to address these concerns and offer a fresh perspective on the album's sonic landscape.
Notably, during an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session with Cradle of Filth's frontman Dani Filth on Reddit in November 2021, it was revealed that the track "Bathory Aria" held a special place in his heart, being the one he was most proud of within the band's extensive catalog.
