"Curtis" marks the debut studio album of American soul artist Curtis Mayfield, hitting shelves in September 1970 under his own label, Curtom Records. Departing from the pop-soul stylings of his previous group, The Impressions, Curtis delves into funk and psychedelic influences, while its lyrical themes delve into the political and social climate of the era.
The album performed strongly upon release, claiming the number one spot on the Billboard Black Albums chart for five nonconsecutive weeks and reaching nineteenth on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. While only "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go" made waves as a single in the United States, a trimmed version of "Move On Up" enjoyed a notable ten-week run in the top 50 of the UK Singles Chart.
In 2020, Curtis earned its place at number 275 on Rolling Stone's prestigious list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
