"Dookie" is the third studio album and major-label debut for American rock band Green Day, hitting the shelves on February 1, 1994, via Reprise Records. Representing the band's first collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo, the album was crafted during the late summer of 1993 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California.
Primarily penned by frontman and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, "Dookie" draws heavily from his personal experiences, tackling themes such as ennui, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality. The album's promotional campaign was fueled by four dynamic singles: "Longview," "Basket Case," a reimagined rendition of "Welcome to Paradise" (originally from their second studio album, 1991's "Kerplunk"), and "When I Come Around."
In a musical landscape dominated by grunge, "Dookie" injected a burst of vivacious, melodic rock into the mainstream, propelling Green Day to global stardom. Revered as a defining masterpiece of both the 1990s and punk rock as a whole, the album played a pivotal role in solidifying the genre's widespread popularity.
Certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), "Dookie" has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, earning its place among the band's most celebrated works and one of the best-selling albums of all time. Heralded by critics and fans alike as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s and a cornerstone of punk rock and pop-punk, its influence endures, with Rolling Stone featuring "Dookie" across multiple iterations of its "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, and ranking it at number one on its "50 Greatest Pop-Punk Albums" list.
In 2024, it was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"
