"Powerslave" is the fifth studio album by the English heavy metal band Iron Maiden, released on September 3, 1984, through EMI Records in Europe and Capitol Records in North America. It was re-released by Sanctuary and Columbia Records in the United States in 2002.
The album's cover artwork features an Ancient Egypt theme, inspired by the title track. This theme was also incorporated into the band's supporting tour, the World Slavery Tour, which began on August 9, 1984, in Warsaw, Poland. The tour is widely regarded as the band's longest and most challenging, resulting in the live album "Live After Death."
"Powerslave" includes a musical adaptation of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," featuring lyrics that incorporate lines from the poem. At 13 minutes and 45 seconds, it was Iron Maiden's longest song for over 30 years until it was surpassed by the 18-minute "Empire of the Clouds" from their 2015 album "The Book of Souls."
This album is notable for being the first by Iron Maiden to feature the same lineup as their previous studio release. This lineup would remain unchanged for two more studio albums. "Powerslave" is also the last album to date to include an instrumental piece and the only one until "Senjutsu" (2021) in which longtime guitarist Dave Murray does not have a songwriting credit.
In 2017, "Powerslave" was ranked number 38 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time."
