"Johnny Cash at San Quentin" marks the 31st overall album and second live recording by the iconic American singer-songwriter Johnny Cash. Recorded live at San Quentin State Prison on February 24, 1969, the album hit the shelves on June 16 of the same year. The historic concert was captured on film by Granada Television, under the production and direction of Michael Darlow.

Part of Cash's conceptual series of live prison albums, which also includes "At Folsom Prison" (1968), "På Österåker" (1973), and "A Concert Behind Prison Walls" (1976), "Johnny Cash at San Quentin" swiftly garnered acclaim and recognition. The album earned gold certification on August 12, 1969, followed by platinum and double platinum status on November 21, 1986, and ultimately triple platinum on March 27, 2003, by the RIAA.

Furthermore, "Johnny Cash at San Quentin" received several Grammy Award nominations, including Album of the Year, and clinched the prestigious Best Male Country Vocal Performance award for the memorable track "A Boy Named Sue."
