"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" is the second and final studio album by the American band Neutral Milk Hotel, released on February 10, 1998, via Merge Records.
The album embodies a blend of indie rock and psychedelic folk, characterized by intentionally lo-fi production quality. Unconventional instruments like the singing saw and uilleann pipes join traditional indie rock elements such as guitar and drums, creating a unique sonic landscape.
Lyrically, the album delves into surrealistic and enigmatic themes, ranging from nostalgia to love, with significant inspiration drawn from "The Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank.
While contemporary reviews of the album were moderately positive, it gradually garnered a cult following over time. Unfortunately, this newfound attention took a toll on the mental health of frontman Jeff Mangum, leading him to withdraw from touring and prompting Neutral Milk Hotel to go on hiatus shortly after. Despite these challenges, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" has since been hailed by music journalists as a landmark indie rock album and one of the finest releases of the 1990s, earning a considerably elevated critical standing.
