"In Rainbows"" is the seventh studio album by the English rock band Radiohead. It was self-released as a pay-what-you-want download on October 10, 2007, followed by a physical release through XL Recordings on December 3, 2007, internationally, and through TBD Records in North America on January 1, 2008. This was Radiohead's first release following the end of their recording contract with EMI after the release of "Hail to the Thief" (2003).
 
By offering "In Rainbows" as a pay-what-you-want download, Radiohead sought to liberate themselves from traditional promotional methods and eliminate barriers between the music and its audience. This innovative approach was the first of its kind for a major act, garnering widespread international media attention. While many applauded Radiohead for challenging established models and exploring new ways to engage with fans, some critics worried it might set a risky precedent that could disadvantage less successful artists.
 
To promote "In Rainbows", Radiohead utilized webcasts, music videos, competitions, and embarked on a global tour. The singles "Jigsaw Falling into Place" and "Nude" were released from the album, with "Nude" becoming Radiohead’s first US top-40 hit since their debut single "Creep" in 1992. The retail version of "In Rainbows" debuted at number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200, and by October 2008, it had sold over three million copies worldwide. It was the best-selling vinyl record of 2008 and achieved Platinum certification in the UK and Canada, and Gold certification in the US, Belgium, and Japan.
"In Rainbows" received widespread acclaim from critics, winning Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package. It was frequently listed as one of the best albums of the year and the decade by various publications, and Rolling Stone included it in their updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
