Critics hailed "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" upon its release. Pitchfork's Brent Sirota bestowed upon it a perfect 10 rating, deeming it "simply a masterpiece." Rolling Stone's David Fricke praised its psychedelic undertones, while Zac Johnson of AllMusic celebrated its musical complexity. E! Online described its flavor as "rich and exotic," growing more intense with each listen, while Stylus Magazine labeled it "a great album" and an ideal starting point for new Wilco fans. Billboard lauded it as "a more adventurous and rewarding release," while The Austin Chronicle awarded it four stars out of five, proclaiming the songs to be "fully realized" and "damn near brilliant" after a period of familiarity. Playlouder hailed it as "The most worth-the-wait long-awaited album in the world ... ever?" Uncut also awarded it four stars out of five, asserting that while some likened it to Americana's "Kid A," it was, in fact, even more successful.
